Taliban's Grip Tightens on Afghan Women's Voices

Fear and Punishment Silence Afghan Women

Afghan women have been living in constant fear since the Taliban seized control of their country two years ago. The Taliban's brutal regime has systematically restricted women's rights in all spheres of life. Afghan women now fear arrest, harassment, and further punishment with every new Taliban decree.

Silencing Women's Voices

The Taliban's crackdown on women's rights has silenced their voices in public and political life. By 2021, Afghan women had secured 69 out of 249 seats in parliament and were actively engaged in peace negotiations and lawmaking. Today, their voices have been effectively extinguished.

International Court as a Potential Platform

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) offers a potential platform for Afghan women to demand accountability and justice for the Taliban's human rights violations. However, the court's role is limited, and it is unclear whether it can effectively advance the rights of Afghan women.

Two Years of Repression

Tuesday marks the two-year anniversary of the Taliban's takeover of Kabul. Since then, Afghan women have endured two years of repression and systematic erosion of their rights. Their fears and the urgency of their plight must not be ignored.
