Introduction
The 2024 United States presidential election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The candidates will compete in primaries and caucuses throughout the year to secure their party's nomination. Voters will then cast their ballots in the general election to choose the next president of the United States.
Polls and Primaries
Presidential candidates will participate in a series of primary elections and caucuses to earn delegates and secure their party's nomination. The primaries will begin in early 2024, and the last ones will likely take place in June 2024.
Primary Types
- Closed primary: Only registered members of a political party can vote in the primary election.
- Open primary: Any registered voter can vote in the primary election, regardless of party affiliation.
- Semi-closed primary: Registered voters can vote in the primary election of their choice, but they must declare a party affiliation at the time of registration.
The results of the primaries and caucuses will determine which candidates advance to the national conventions, where the parties will formally nominate their candidates for president.
Caucuses
Caucuses are another type of primary election in which voters gather in designated locations to discuss and vote on candidates. Caucuses are typically held in the evenings, and they can be a more involved process than primaries.
To participate in a caucus, voters must register with a political party and attend the caucus in their precinct. The caucus will then divide into groups of supporters for each candidate, and the size of each group will determine how many delegates the candidate receives.
National Conventions
The national conventions are held in the summer of 2024. At the conventions, each party will nominate its candidate for president and vice president.
The Republican National Convention will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 15-18, 2024. The Democratic National Convention will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, from August 26-29, 2024.
General Election
The general election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. All registered voters who are 18 years of age or older may vote in the general election.
The candidates who win the popular vote in each state will receive that state's electoral votes. The candidate who wins the majority of electoral votes (at least 270) will be elected president.
Voter Information
To vote in the 2024 presidential election, you must be registered to vote in your state. You can register to vote online, by mail, or in person at your local election office.
